It's the final instalment of the epic Tunnels series. Elliot and Will are trapped in the centre of the world with not another living soul after a deadly virus was released into the atmosphere. Their enemies are dead, but they have no way of communicating with the surface where the war rages on. England is in chaos and the rest of the world has turned their backs. Their only chance, a long forgotten truth that will change everything. No one is safe and everyone will be tested.

I don't believe it. I don't know how to feel. Is this really the end? Did that really just happen? How am I supposed to continue with life now?
The Tunnels series just exploded. I mean, I never would have guessed where this was heading. That ending was so open ended that I don't believe it's really an ending at all. Which is why I really struggled to rate this book. As a continuation of the series? Brilliant. As the final instalment of a series? It sucked.
I don't know what to say without giving away some major spoilers. This whole book is one surprise after another, what with (view spoiler) and other general craziness.
It was a whirlwind of emotions and I must confess that I did cry my eyes out at one point, (view spoiler). Surprises were around every corner. When Will and Chester first met Elliot in the Deeps, I never imagined she would become so important, but with this instalment the tables turned completely, suddenly she was at the forefront while Will was sidelined. I'd like to go back and re-read the start of the series, I feel like that was a simpler time. Back when I had no answers but didn't care one bit because I was just happy to be along for the ride. But now that the series is over I feel like all I have is questions. I'm drowning in them.
If there's one thing to be said about the Tunnels series though, is that it is brilliant. The ideas, the execution, it's all so clever and there's not a day that will go by that I won't be thanking my friend for introducing me to the series back in 2008. This series has been an adventure and Gordon has taken me places no other author has.
